FAO Liaison Office to AU & UNECA

[Home]

The FAO Liaison Office provides not only liaison and advisory services to African Union (AU) & United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) on key issues but also participates in organized meetings and workshops in relation with FAO's mandate. It also links the Representation with other UN agencies and the donor community. It shares some responsibilities in the formulation and preparation of regional and sub-regional projects. Upon the request of the AU the office along with the Representation assisted in the formulation of a TCP on “African Economic Integration and Food Security”. This TCP Project is to provide support to Au in reviewing and assessing the technical capacity available in Africa and to assist in setting up mechanisms required to establish a common market for agricultural products thus strengthening Intra-African Trade and Food Security.

The FAO Representation and the Liaison Office actively participate (including organizing, etc.) in the side meeting of African Ministers of Agriculture, joined the NEPAD steering Committee in order to review the CAAPD of NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa's Development) 9 th June 2002, Rome, Italy.

As a strong collaborator in the formulation and implementation of NEPAD the Representation Office organized a one day Ministry of Agriculture/FAO Workshop to sensitize and familiarize participants on the principles and objectives of NEPAD and to enable them to be in a better position to translate the principles and objectives into action at the country level.

The organization through its representation in Ethiopia signed with the African Union a TCP on “Assistance for the establishment of a common market for basic food products”. The project will undertake the necessary analyses to allow the formulation of a strategy and Plan of Action to assist in furthering agricultural market integration and trade in basic food products in Africa.
