Inter-Agency Task Force on the UN Response to Long-term Food Security in the Horn of Africa

Following the establishment of an Inter-Agency Task Force by the Secretary General of the UN to prepare UN strategy for the “Elimination of Food Insecurity in the Horn of Africa” a TCP project in support of a “Pastoral Community Development Project (PCDP)” is being implemented in two weredas in Afar and Somali Regions. The TCP is pilot to a bigger Government/World Bank and IFAD financed PCDP. The main objectives of the TCP include: the empowerment of communities, including women and youth, to improve their well being through self managed programmes; capacity building of wereda technical staff in initiating, promoting and managing a participatory process in community development and strengthening the capacity of the Pastoral Extension Team of the Ministry of Agriculture in implementing pastoral projects.
As an important aspect of food security in the Horn a Sub-Regional workshop on “Feeding Cities in the Horn of Africa” was conducted in Addis Ababa . The participants to the Sub-Regional workshop were mayors of Addis Ababa , Nairobi , Kampala , Khartoum and Djibouti and their colleagues.
