Trust Fund Projects

[Home]

Through its Trust Fund Project FAO assists amongst others in strengthening farmer based seed supply systems at the local level, improving nutrition and household food security as well as undertaking country wide surveys and disposal of obsolete stocks. At least over 100 different types of pesticides exist which are environmentally hazardous and seriously risky to human and animal health thus becoming a matter of high priority and a major issue of national concern. Over 2000 tons of obsolete pesticides and several pieces of damaged, rusted contaminated containers have been identified some of which have already been eliminated through a series of FAO implemented obsolete Pesticide Projects funded by various Donor countries.

FAO Seed Security Project GCP/ETH/062/NOR funded by the Norwegian Government endeavours to strengthen farmers-based seed supply systems at the local level in a sustainable manner, in the drought prone areas of Eastern Hararge, Oromia National Regional State by implementing on farm seed production approach that stresses sustainability, learns from previous seed project mistakes and plans and implements activities based on experiences gained in step wise manner.

The project is implemented in three phases with general objective to contribute to the efforts of the government of Ethiopia to improve and sustain seed security, leading to decreased reliance on seed/food external relief interventions. [detail]
