Profiles: Livestock

Livestock and dairy production
Livestock production represents an important economic activity. Cattle, small ruminants and different species of poultry are raised to generate income, supplement the diet of rural families and for socio-cultural reasons. The contribution of livestock to household food security and to the balance of seasonal fluctuation in food availability is growing.

The traditional small ruminant and poultry production systems face several constraints including high mortality rates because of Rift Valley Fever, Peste des Petit Ruminants (PPR) and Newcastle Disease and inadequate nutrition. Investment in traditional livestock production system is also limited by lack of credit facilities for livestock owners, butchers and dealers.
