About the Crop Protection Unit

The Crop Protection Unit of RAFA focuses on the strengthening and enhancement of crop protection capabilities, policies and programmes at national and regional level, as a means for increasing agricultural production for food security, whilst preserving the environment and conserving biodiversity.

The Crop Protection Unit focuses at the moment on two main areas; Pesticide Management and Integrated Pest Management.

Projects and Activities

1. Technical backstopping and administrative support for field implementation of national IPM Farmers Field Schools (FFS) projects. In 2000 assistance on IPM/FFS has been given to Cameroon, Nigeria, Rwanda and Ghana.

2. Assistance to the Pan Africa Striga Network, PASCON.

3. Assistance to countries in the region on problems associated with obsolete pesticides. An inventory on obsolete pesticides was carried out in Ghana in 1999 to locate and determine stocks of unusable pesticides in the country.

4. Collaboration with the ECOWAS Secretariat on the publication of Pesticide Management Newsletter for West Africa.

5. Collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency in Ghana on issues of pesticide legislation.
