| Agriculture :: Nutrition and consumer protection |
Lack of adequate nutrition saps the economic productivity of individuals and undermines the economic health of nations. FAO thus assists countries in the region - as part of a global initiative following-up on the 1996 World Food Summit - to set up national hunger identification systems. The Food Insecurity and Vulnerability Information and Mapping System (FIVIMS) provides reliable, accurate and consistent information on the extent, nature and causes of food insecurity and vulnerability at subnational, national, regional and global levels.
Efforts to improve household food security and nutrition as a means to end hunger and malnutrition are also at the heart of FAO's commitments. It conducts technical network activities on food safety training and builds national capacities.
Consumer awareness of food quality and safety and nutrition education programmes are important components to improve consumer protection. Consumers should have adequate knowledge of food hygiene to enable them to use food properly and to prevent contamination and growth or survival of food borne pathogens by storing and preparing it correctly.
