The Asia-Pacific region is a major producer of cereals, legumes, vegetables, fruits and industrial crops like rubber, coconut, pepper and palm oil. The region produces 90 percent of the world’s rice which provides more than half the daily dietary energy to over three billion people in the region. Over 50 percent of industrial crops of the world are produced in the region.
Increasing and sustaining crop production while preserving the environment for enhancing food security and alleviating poverty hold considerable challenges as over 75 percent of the world's absolutely poor live in this region and an estimated 508 million people are malnourished.
FAO supports member countries in Asia and the Pacific through the following key activities:
Promotion of lesser-known plants with localized and/or international potential as crops |
Assessment and promotion of high-value crops for distinct agro-ecological environments |
Introduction of improved cropping systems for increased and sustained crop productivity |
Integrated management practices for improvement and development of horticultural crops |
Sustainable intensification of urban and peri-urban agriculture production systems |
Coordination and harmonization of phytosanitary measures
through development of regional and international standards for phytosanitary measures, and provision of
technical assistance to facilitate the implementation of the Asia and Pacific Plant Protection
Agreement and International
Plant Protection Convention |
Promotion of economically viable and environmentally friendly integrated pest management |
Implementation of the international code of conduct on distribution and use of pesticides
