Capacity building and technical assistance in food and agriculture statistics

Asia and Pacific Commission on Agricultural Statistics (APCAS)

The 22nd session of the Asia and Pacific Commission on Agricultural Statistics was organized by FAO in Kuching, Malaysia from 9 to 13 June 2008 with attendance of 54 delegates and observers from 17 member countries (out of 25).

Workshops and technical sessions

Workshops and technical sessions conducted in support of regional capacity building activities include a workshop for senior statisticians and policy-makers from countries in the region on the use of major databases and their applications in support of agricultural and rural development policies in Bangkok in May 2004, an expert consultation in analysis and dissemination of census and survey data in July 2005 and an expert consultation on farmers' income statistics in December 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand.

FAO direct technical assistance

Technical support has been provided to two statistical projects. The first is the regional project "Strengthening Regional Data Exchange System on Food and Agricultural Statistics in Asia and Pacific Countries (RDES)" which completed activities in December 2007, while the second is the Afghanistan project "Support to the Food, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Information Management and Policy Unit (FAAHM) in Developing and Agricultural Statistics and Market Information System – Phase II".

Likewise, assistance is being provided to several countries in the region to strengthen national capacities with project proposals submitted for improving livestock statistics in Nepal, decentralizing agricultural statistics in Timor-Leste, conducting agricultural census in Cambodia, a rapid national rice assessment in Lao PDR and agricultural census training in Pakistan. Assistance was also provided to Indonesia on livestock statistics; to Myanmar on preparation for an agricultural census; to Tonga on the development of a sustainable agricultural statistics system; to Viet Nam on the analysis of the agricultural census and strengthening of a food security information system with funding from an Italian trust fund project; to Cambodia on agricultural productivity improvement; and to Bangladesh on crop yield forecasting and agro-meteorology.

Food price and situation monitoring – Asia Pacific Food Situation Update (APFSU)

As part of the FAO response to the surge in food prices over the past year, the regional office is monitoring food prices and food security in Asia and the Pacific. A monthly newsletter titled Asia Pacific Food Situation Update is being produced using information from a regional network of market correspondents. It also keeps track of the progress of projects under FAO's Initiative on Soaring Food Prices that are providing essential farming inputs and technical know-how to vulnerable farming households in the countries.
