The Asia-Pacific region covers 25 percent of the world's land area and contains about 15 percent of the world's forests. The forests of Asia and the Pacific constitute an immense renewable resource and make a vital contribution to the environment, societies and economies of the region.
As the region's population grows, generally prospers and ages, its perceptions of forests are also changing. Forests are no longer viewed simply as sources of fodder, fuel wood and timber. Forest management has become far more complex – encompassing watershed management, carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation and ecotourism. Forest managers have to balance these multiple demands and expectations. They also have to keep in mind the vital role of forests as providers of food and livelihood to those living in or near them.
The FAO regional office recognizes these concerns while assisting Asia-Pacific countries in making wise use of their forests. It guides and supports forest policy reforms, helps build capacities and strong institutions, and facilitates the transfer of knowledge and technologies.
FAO forestry activities in the region address a myriad of challenges including:
Sustainable forest management |
Development and implementation of national codes of practice for forest harvesting |
Plantation incentives |
Promoting assisted natural regeneration and forest rehabilitation |
Capacity building for implementing effective national forest policies |
Improving forestry statistics |
