Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission (APFC)
Created in 1949, the
Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission (APFC) is one of six Regional Forestry
Commissions that cover the world’s major geographic regions. The APFC discusses
and analyzes forestry issues to promote environmentally sound and economically
efficient technologies and to encourage implementation of appropriate policies in
line with changing trends in forestry at the regional level.
Asia Pacific Association of Forestry Research Institutions (APAFRI)
The
Asia Pacific Association of Forestry Research Institutions (APAFRI)
is an
independent non-profit body, which aims to enhance research and technology
development capabilities in support of conservation and management of forest
resources in Asia-Pacific. The establishment of APAFRI was prompted by the need
to provide a viable institutional framework for regional forestry research
collaboration. The Secretariat of the Association was initially based at the FAO
Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok. The secretariat is now
based at the Forest Research Institute in Malaysia.
Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR)
The
Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) is a global knowledge
organization committed to enhancing the benefits of forests for people in the
tropics. CIFOR was established under the CGIAR system in response to global
concerns about the social, environmental and economic consequences of loss
and degradation of forests. It operates through a series of highly decentralized
partnerships with key institutions and/or individuals throughout the developing
and industrialized worlds. CIFOR’s mission is to contribute to the sustained well-being of people in developing countries, particularly in the tropics, through
collaborative strategic and applied research and related activities in forest
systems and forestry, and by promoting the transfer of appropriate new technologies
and the adoption of new methods of social organization, for national development.
CIFOR’s major objectives are (1) to improve the scientific basis for ensuring the
balanced management of forests and forest lands; (2) to develop policies and
technologies for sustainable use and management of forest goods and services;
and (3) to strengthen national capacities for research to support the development
of policies and technologies for the optimal use of forests and forest lands.
International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO)
IUFRO is a
non-governmental international organization open to organizations and individuals
involved in forestry research. The mission of IUFRO is to promote international
cooperation in forestry research and related sciences. IUFRO aspires to bring together
scientific knowledge about all aspects of trees and forests through the cooperative
efforts of its world-wide member research organizations and scientists. Through this
means it seeks to promote the sustainable use of forest ecosystems to provide multiple
benefits for local people and for society as a whole.
Regional Community Forestry Training Center for Asia and the Pacific
(RECOFTC)
The
Regional Community Forestry Training Center for Asia and the Pacific
(RECOFTC) seeks to promote an effective role (expressed in terms of resource
control and benefits) of local people, in and around forested landscapes, in
the sustainable management of forests in Asia and the Pacific. The objectives
of RECOFTC are to (1) build capacity in the region to develop and support
community forestry, including capacity in training, education, research, policy
development and program implementation; (2) collect, generate and share relevant
knowledge, methods and approaches for community forestry development; and (3)
support partnerships that strengthen local and national institutions to plan and
implement community forestry activities.
U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service (USDA Forest Service)
The
U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service is a federal
agency that manages public lands in national forests and grasslands.
The Forest Service is also the largest forestry research organization
in the world, and provides technical and financial assistance to state
and private forestry agencies. Not least, the Forest Service plays a key
role in formulating policy and coordinating U.S. support for the protection
and sound management of the world’s forest resources. It works closely with
other agencies such as the Agency for International Development, the U.S.
Department of State, and the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as
with non-profit development organizations, wildlife organizations, universities,
and international assistance organizations.
