Rooted in a long history of collaboration with rural people's and farmer's organizations and with a broad range of non-governmental organization (NGOs), partnerships with NGOs and civil society organizations (CGOs) are an integral part of the work of the FAO Regional Office in Bangkok.
To ensure that civil society cooperation permeates all programmes of the entire regional office, an NGO/CSO working group has been established, chaired by the head of the Bangkok office and composed of representatives of each group.
Six Asia-Pacific regional NGO/CSO consultations have been held since 1996 in preparation for two world food summits in 1996 and 2002 or in conjunction with sessions of the FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific.
The main regional focal points of FAO-civil society cooperation in Asia-Pacific are the following three International Planning Committee (IPC) members from the region:
