Learning resource on gender-responsive agriculture and rural development

Asian rural women make a critical contribution to achieving FAO's mission of a hunger free world and the UN's millennium development goal of poverty alleviation. Yet there are myths and misperceptions on gender mainstreaming in agriculture and rural development and mainstreaming women's participation in development processes. Information can help bridge the knowledge gap between technocrats in agriculture and rural production and gender specialists and thus foster a common purpose of capitalizing on human resource capacities vested in rural women for achieving the multiple goals of women's empowerment and gender equality in pursuit of food security and poverty alleviation.

The FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific has produced an interactive CD-ROM learning resource package which provides an overview of paradigms and policy perspectives on rural women and agriculture in the region. It contains a glossary of technical terms; situation reviews on the status of rural women and related major issues; tools of analysis for gender responsive approaches and integrative strategies to understand gender dimensions and women inclusive development planning in agriculture and the rural economy. (Click
here to view the online version of the learning resource package. Macromedia Flash Player and high bandwidth connection required.)

The intended audience is agriculture and rural development professionals in research, education and extension. It can also be a valuable resource for distance and open learning programmes; women's studies; and a multitude of learning and training centres focusing on gender/women in development. The initiative is a response of FAO to address the content gap identified in the ICTs for development framework.

Social and gender analytical methodologies and policy strategies

FAO has developed social and gender analytical methodologies for gender analysis and planning in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India and the Philippines for mainstreaming rural women's rights in development through multidisciplinary and interagency collaboration.

Forums to articulate and advocate emerging rural gender equality priorities

FAO carries out regional consultations, policy work and programmes for the advancement of rural women in the context of emerging development priorities and the global agenda for the advancement of rural women.

Gender differentiated database in agriculture and rural production

Support is provided to develop information on rural women for policy and advocacy through assistance to improve FAO's agricultural statistics to include sex-segregated data and by sponsoring special studies on the situation of rural women in regional countries.

Fact sheets on women in agriculture, environment and rural production

FAO produced fact sheets for 12 countries in the region highlighting the role of rural women in production and natural resource management [http://www.fao.org/sd/wpdirect/WPre0104.htm].

Gender, technology and capacity building

Gender-responsive technology publications

The FAO/UNDP project in Thailand on gender-responsive technology for poverty alleviation (completed in 2003) generated three publications in English and Thai that are available as hard copies or on CD-ROM:

Policy framework on gender responsive technology for poverty alleviation
Directory of local organizations supporting rural households' technology demand
Technology manual for rural households

Training rural women

In Cambodia, the FAO-funded technical cooperation project assisted women in improving their household food security and family economy. It supported the training of rural women in learning new technologies and the application of agriculture techniques to improve their food security and livelihoods. Rural women were trained to become local technology leaders.

In the Cook Islands, an FAO-funded technical cooperation programme project assists rural women to improve home garden practices and learn new technologies in food processing to improve food security.

Empowering rural women in an ICT-driven knowledge society and information economy

Regional consultations and collaborations are carried out to assist rural women in adapting and prospering in a society and economy increasingly driven by information and communication technologies. Main thrusts are on developing gender responsive content and strengthening distance learning programs to reach rural women.
Gender, biodiversity and food security

Highlighting rural women's role in agrobiodiversity management

Regional country case studies feature the role of rural women in agrobiodiversity management relevant to food and health security. Case studies have been completed for Bangladesh, India, the Maldives, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.
