Integrated packages of improved water use technologies and management tools are developed by FAO and made available to Member Nations to promote the efficient use of water in agriculture. The adoption of these strategies and technologies is enhanced through technical assistance for the introduction of water-efficient technologies, better management structures, and ways to establish accountability and incentives at both the farm and the scheme level. Emphasis is placed on capacity building through training programmes, seminars, networking and information sharing among national and regional research and development agencies.
This is achieved through:
-
Elaborating diagnostic tools on water use efficiency problems,
-
Preparing procedures and manuals on irrigation scheme management improvement, focusing on low-cost, high-frequency, low-volume irrigation to fit the characteristics of the Region,
-
Developing software packages and information management systems related to irrigation,
-
Elaborating guidelines on agricultural practices and cropping systems for increased in-situ water conservation,
-
Providing technical assistance to member countries for the adoption of these packages.
