Functions and Responsibilities

The main functions of the FAO Regional Office for the Near East are to:

  • Provide technical assistance and policy advice to Member Governments, as may be required, through providing the services of FAO technical officers and international and national consultants.
  • Organize capacity building activities in all fields related to food security and to rural and of agricultural development, including forestry and fisheries.
  • Organize technical meetings and expert consultations to review agricultural issues of importance to the Region.
  • Work closely with UN system organizations to promote the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Member Countries of the Region and to monitor progress achieved at the country and regional levels.
  • Undertake in-depth sector and sub-sector assessments to identify the main constraints hampering agricultural development in the Region and to propose alternative solutions to overcome these constraints.
  • Act as executing agency for the implementation of rural and agricultural development projects in the Region funded either by national governments or by bi-lateral and/or multilateral funding agencies.
  • Act as a specialized advisory body to Member Governments to advice on the feasibility of development projects and to assess their potential economic, social and environmental impacts.
  • Encourage technical and economic cooperation among the countries of the Region and promote the use of regional and national institutions.
  • Support the FAO Country Representatives in the Region by assisting them in policy level negotiations, advising them on regional policies affecting their host country, and by making available, regional technical officers or consultants for country assignments.
  • Cooperate with regional organizations and other development partners in supporting rural and agricultural development projects and programmes in the Region.
  • Organize and conduct the FAO Regional Conference for the Near East and the sessions of the FAO Regional Commissions for the Near East in close collaboration with the technical divisions in FAO Headquarters.
  • Assist Member Governments in establishing regional networks for exchanging information and expertise and for strengthening technical cooperation.
  • Produce technical publications providing up-to-date information on technology in agriculture, forestry and fisheries, for use by agricultural practioners and by government and non-government organizations in the Region.

The Regional Office works in close collaboration with the technical divisions at FAO Headquarters in undertaking the above tasks. Its activities are funded from the regular programme of the Organization and from extra-budgetary resources.
