3rd NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL POLICY WORKSHOP\

Under the auspices of the Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, the National  Agricultural Policy Center (NAPC), supported by the FAO Project GCP/SYR/006/ITA, organized the 3rd National Agricultural Policy Workshop at Cham Palace, Damascus, on 1 July 2004.

The Workshop represented an important benchmark in the activities of the Project “Assistance for Capacity Building through Enhancing Operation of the National Agricultural Policy Center”, executed jointly by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform of the Syrian Arab Republic (MAAR) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with funds provided by the Italian Government.

It was organized to disseminate and discuss, in a national forum, the results of three major studies prepared in the course of the project activities: “The Farming Systems in the Syrian Arab Republic”, “Comparative Advantage of Selected Syrian Agricultural Products”, and “Syrian Accession to WTO: Requirements and Opportunities”.

The program of the Workshop included an opening ceremony, a short session presenting the activities of the Project and of the NAPC, and a session for each study presented. Attendance to the workshop included policy makers and public officers from all main departments of the MAAR, other Ministries and various public establishments, Members of the Parliament, academics from various universities, stakeholders from the private sector, representatives of various professional and nongovernmental organizations, and representatives of international organizations and embassies.
