Round Tables



In parallel to the plenary sessions of the Summit, there were four thematic round tables, each lasting three hours. They were co-chaired by Ministers, and each had four invited expert panellists. As a common goal, the round tables explored further how to deliver on the Summit’s Declaration.

They provided a forum for debate and experience-sharing on how to reach the common objective of eliminating hunger. They took advantage of the opportunity presented by the presence of a large number of decision-makers and experts at the Summit to engage in a useful discussion focusing on practical implementation issues faced by all countries.

The four round tables were:

Round Table 1: Minimizing the negative impact of the food, economic and financial crises on world food security

Round Table 2: Implementation of the reform of global governance of food security

Round Table 3: Climate change adaptation and mitigation: challenges for agriculture and food security

Round Table 4: Measures to enhance global food security: rural development, smallholder farmers and trade considerations

The path to the Summit

Three important events have prepared the ground for the Summit:

The High-Level Expert Forum on How to Feed the World in 2050 examined policy options that governments should consider adopting to ensure that the world population can be fed when it nears its peak of nearly 9.2 billion people in the middle of this century.

The Committee on World Food Security considered reforms that will enable it to play a much more effective role in the global governance of food security.

The theme of World Food Day this year is how to ensure food security in times of crisis.
