Inter-Parliamentary meeting

As was the case for the previous Food Summits, an Inter-Parliamentary meeting is being organized on 13 November 2009 in Rome on the occasion of the World Summit on Food Security (Rome, 16-18 November 2009).

This event, for which invitations have been addressed to the Speakers of national parliaments of member countries of FAO, will be co-organized by the two Houses of the Italian Parliament – the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate – and  the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

In addition to raising awareness of food security issues, the event will provide a forum to discuss the role of the national parliaments in addressing agriculture, hunger and food security, particularly in times of global crisis. The outcome of the deliberations will be conveyed to the World Summit on Food Security.

The path to the Summit

Three important events have prepared the ground for the Summit:

The High-Level Expert Forum on How to Feed the World in 2050 examined policy options that governments should consider adopting to ensure that the world population can be fed when it nears its peak of nearly 9.2 billion people in the middle of this century.

The Committee on World Food Security considered reforms that will enable it to play a much more effective role in the global governance of food security.

The theme of World Food Day this year is how to ensure food security in times of crisis.
