Waste less food – and help end hunger

Wednesday 5 June marks World Environment Day and an opportunity for everyone to take action on the critical issue of food waste and losses

03 Jun 2013 -

Wednesday 5 June marks World Environment Day and an opportunity for everyone to take action on the critical issue of food waste and losses. “Think. Eat. Save” is the theme, echoing the name of the campaign launched recently by FAO and UNEP, which encourages people to reduce their “foodprint” by making more informed choices.

Every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted, while at the same time 1 in 7 people worldwide goes to bed hungry and more than 20 000 children under the age of 5 die from hunger every day. This is why Zero Hunger Challenge has targeted food waste and losses as one of its five key objectives. For more about “Think. Eat. Save”: www.thinkeatsave.org.
