The following recommendations are suggested for management of
mulberry germplasm and utilization at global level.
- Establishment of International Networking on Sericultural Germplasm Management
at global level, Co-ordination between countries with continuous interaction
and linkages and identification of working group with international training
and technology transfer under auspices of FAO.
- Documentation of total mulberry germplasm holdings with detailed passport
information at global level to develop international database on mulberry
germplasm.
- Standardization of formats for passport information, characterization and
evaluation measurement methods and publication of mulberry descriptor in English
- Report generation on status of mulberry germplasm characterization and
evaluation and gap analysis and development of mulberry core collections.
- Taxonomical revision of genus Morus at global level to be undertaken.
There is an urgent need for congregation of all Morus species available
in the world at one place, which will facilitate to revise taxonomical position
of genus Morus at global level. Monographing of genus Morus
is highly essential.
- Joint survey and exploration for collection of wild mulberry germplasm
resources, mapping and indexing of seribiodiversity.
- Finalizing the Global Action Plan for Seribiodiversity.
- International screening of mulberry germplasm and identification of promising
lines for exploitation.
- Inclusion of mulberry in the Multilateral System for Global Exchange with
benefit sharing. In the beginning the wild genetic resources and different
Morus species native and endemic to respective countries, which are
hitherto, are not developed may be shared to conduct studies on wide hybridisation
and utilization.
- International cooperation for funding mechanism/monitoring by FAO, UNDP,
WWF and other organization for conservation and management of mulberry genetic
resources.
- Establishment of In vitro and Cryopreservation facilities for long-term
conservation of mulberry germplasm, which will also facilitate global exchange
of mulberry germplasm. International training at Japan is suggested as it
has done excellent work on Cryopreservation of mulberry germplasm resources.
- Promotion of in situ conservation with ex situ backup to
be given high priority
- International networking of sericultural website and linkage with international
genetic resources websites like WIEWS, SINGER, UKPGRG, NGB, GRIN and IN ARIS
for easy accesses of mulberry germplasm information and utilization of the
resources.
