1. INTRODUCTION AND TERMS OF REFERENCE

The Government of Greece, assisted by the United Nations Development Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, is engaged in the project Development of Marine and Inland Aquaculture in Greece (FI: DP/GRE/85/002) whose main objective is the collaboration with the established national authorities and organizations concerned with aquaculture.

As part of the project operations, FAO assigned Mr C. Askew as consultant from 15 September to 23 October 1987 with the following terms of reference:

In collaboration with counterparts, study the opportunity to develop shellfish culture in Greece.

In particular, the consultant will:

  1. Carry out a pre-arranged programme of visits and meetings in conjunction with counterpart specialists;

  2. Prepare a synopsis of the present situation related to crustacean and mollusc farming in Greece;

  3. Prepare a synopsis of the cultural systems and the species appropriate for growth, together with the identification of any constraints;

  4. Describe the potential for development and identify the zones where it should be considered on a priority basis;

  5. Propose strategies for enhancing the aquaculture production of shellfish;

  6. Provide limited technical assistance as requested in response to particular situations encountered;

  7. Provide a two-day seminar on aspects of shellfish culture relevant to Greece;

  8. Prepare a report on his main findings and recommendations suitable for inclusion as an Appendix to the draft National Plan for Aquaculture Development by the end of assignment in Greece.
