1. Introduction

The EIFAC Workshop on Recreational Fishery Planning and Management Strategies in Central and Eastern Europe was held in Žilina, Slovakia, from 22–25 August. The Workshop was organized in response to a recommendation of the 18th Session of EIFAC (Rome, 1994) and in preparation for the Symposium on Social, Economic and Management Aspects of Recreational Fisheries to be held in Dublin, Ireland, 11–19 June 1996 in conjunction with the 19th Session of EIFAC. The Workshop was opened by Ing. Dusan Tomek, President of the Slovak Anglers' Association and Ing. Lubomir Micek, Director of the Foreign Relations Department of the Ministry of Agriculture. It was attended by 22 participants from 8 countries (see Annex I). The programme of the meeting is appended as Annex II.
