Organization and editing

Pascal Liu, Commodity Specialist, Commodities and Trade Division, FAO, is joint co-ordinator and principal author. Mr. Liu initiated and co-ordinated the edition and publication of this study. He is one of the principal editors and also wrote chapter 1 and the chapter on France. His field of work is related to global trade and markets of horticultural products, both conventional and organic.

Isolina Boto, Deputy Director of the Seminars and Studies Department at CTA, is joint co-ordinator for the market surveys of Austria and Italy, as well as the country case studies on Cameroon, Zambia, Dominican Republic, Papua New Guinea and Madagascar. Ms. Boto also contributed to the editing of those chapters.

Rudy Kortbech-Olesen, Senior Market Development Adviser, International Trade Centre UNCTAD/WTO (ITC), Switzerland, is responsible for ITC’s trade promotion and development activities in organic products. Mr. Kortbech-Olesen was the co-ordinator and principal author of the ITC study, entitled Organic food and beverages: world supply and major European markets (1999). He co-ordinated ITC’s inputs to the present study and wrote the chapter on Denmark.

Bart Vrolijk, Agricultural Trade Specialist, Commodities and Trade Division, FAO, is joint co-ordinator and one of the principal editors of this publication. Mr. Vrolijk wrote the introduction and conclusions, as well as the chapters on The Netherlands, Belgium, Argentina and Chile. Moreover, he contributed substantially to the chapter on Japan. His specialization is in global trade and international agricultural commodity markets, including international trade policy developments.

Paul Pilkauskas, Senior Commodity Specialist, is leader of the Horticultural Products Group in FAO's Commodities and Trade Division, which co-ordinated the finalization of the publication. He is also Secretary of the Intergovernmental Group on Citrus Fruit and of the Sub-Group on Bananas of the Intergovernmental Group on Bananas and Tropical Fruits. Mr. Pilkauskas is one of the principal editors of this publication.

Other collaborating authors and consultants

Marion Isabelle Buley, Germany, specializes in marketing of organic products. She was previously project manager with Protrade/GTZ GmbH, Germany, and wrote the manual: Exporting Organic Products: Marketing Handbook (1997). She is now project manager of the GTZ Organic Farming project. She contributed to this study with the chapter on Germany.

Peter Fuchs, of Fox Research AB in Sweden, specializes in the Nordic food sector. His clients have included the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the Swedish Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the private sector. He contributed to the present study with the chapter on Sweden.

David Jones, of David Jones & Associates, United Kingdom, has carried out a number of assignments for ITC, other UN organizations, the European Commission and the private sector. He contributed to this study with the chapter on the United Kingdom.

Timothy J. Larsen, Sr. International Marketing Specialist, Colorado Department of Agriculture, United States, has developed and managed a national export program on organic and natural foods and is an international speaker on US organic industry trends. He has also prepared a number of publications on fruits and vegetables, including market studies and manuals. He wrote the chapter on the United States.

Birgitt Boor, BIOHERB, Consulting for International Organic Agriculture, Austria, is specialized in production, processing and marketing of organic products. Ms. Boor wrote the chapters on Papua New Guinea and Madagascar.

Moses Kairo, Regional Bioscience Coordinator, CAB International Caribbean and Latin America Regional Centre, Trinidad and Tobago. Mr. Kairo wrote the chapter on the Dominican Republic.

Chris May, Bioglobal Consultancy Limited, New Zealand, carried out the market survey for Japan and assisted in drafting that chapter.

Raffaele Zanoli, Associate Professor of Agro-Food Marketing, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ancona, Italy. Mr. Zanoli is also a partner in the EU FAIR project "Organic farming & the CAP". He wrote the chapter on Italy.

Otto Schmid, research Institute of Organic Agriculture, FIBL, Switzerland, assisted by Darren Halpin and Toralf Richter, wrote the chapter on Switzerland.

Markus Schermer, Institute of High Mountain Research and Alpine Agriculture and Forestry, University of Innsbruck, wrote the chapter on Austria.

T. Deiters, Agro Eco Consultancy, the Netherlands, in collaboration with Annemieke de Vos, Green Fox Ltd Lusaka, wrote the chapter on Zambia.

Jean-Martin Tetang, EXPORT AGRO SARL, Cameroon, with assistance from Guy Wamba, JP Zouakeu and P. Bomia wrote the chapter on Cameroon.

Jacqueline Schreurs, temporary assistant for the Seminar and Studies Department at CTA, is a rural development sociologist and importer of organic wine. She contributed to the editing of the CTA's input to this publication.
