Accompanying Notes

Gives definitions of units of measurement in the fishing industry of historical interest, e.g. kit, cran, box and barrel. Lists densities and stowage rates for wet (unfrozen), frozen and other fish products. Gives approximate weights for parts of cod as a percentage of the whole, e.g. head, guts, liver, skin. Gives yield data for a number of fish products as a percentage of the whole fish, e.g. weight of fillet with or without skin from several lean and fatty species, weight of smoked and salted products, and weight of the edible portion of shellfish. All the figures in this Note are in British units; refer to Note 40 for conversions to metric units. It is important to note that in some cases yields from current processing methods may be significantly different to those given in this Note. Nowadays, the 70 litre plastic box with a nominal capacity of 45 kg fish plus ice is widely used, but other sizes are also in use. The capacity of the unit box should not be used as an accurate indicator of the quantity of fish actually present in the box on landing. It has been common practice to overfill these plastic boxes by up to 40% compared with the nominal capacity.
