Glossary of some Special Terms used in the Book

Agricultural Population

The agricultural population is defined as all persons depending for their livelihood on agriculture, hunting, fishing or forestry. This estimate comprises all persons actively engaged in agriculture and their non-working dependants.

Annual and Permanent Cropland / Cultivated Area

Sum of land under temporary crops (double-cropped areas are counted only once), temporary meadows for mowing or pasture, land under market and kitchen gardens and land temporarily fallow (land abandoned for less than five years, or as a result of shifting cultivation, is not included in this category.) plus land cultivated with crops that occupy the land for long periods and need not be replanted after each harvest, such as cocoa, coffee and rubber (this category includes land under flowering shrubs, fruit trees, nut trees and vines, but excludes land under trees grown for wood or timber).

Agro-ecological Zones (AEZ)

Agro-ecological zones are defined and delineated by FAO based on the average annual length of growing period for crops, which depends on, inter alia, precipitation and temperature. The length of growing period for these zones are: humid, greater than 270 days; moist subhumid, 180 to 269 days; dry subhumid, 120 to 179 days; semiarid, 60 to 119 days; arid, 0 to 59 days.

International Poverty Line / Dollar Poverty

Poverty reference lines set at US$1 and US$2 consumption per capita per day in 1993 Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). The former reference line is generally used when discussing poverty which, when set at this level, is sometimes referred to as dollar poverty. Many countries also set national poverty lines which generally differ from the international poverty line.

Irrigated Area

Data on irrigation relate to areas equipped to provide water to the crops. These include areas equipped for full and partial control irrigation, spate irrigation areas, and equipped wetland or inland valley bottoms.

Land Area

Total area of region within the farming system or region excluding areas under inland water bodies.

Total Economically Active Population

This refers to the number of all employed and unemployed persons (including those seeking work for the first time). It covers employers; self-employed workers; salaried employees; wage earners; unpaid workers assisting in a family, farm or business operation; members of producers' co-operatives; and members of the armed forces. The economically active population is also called the labour force.
