2 PROJECT SUMMARIES

OBJECTIVES:

1. determination of optimum density of ducks, for maximizing fish production in an integrated system, under prevailing local socio-economic conditions;
2. determination of stocking densities and species composition of fish required for optimizing production in the integrated system;
3. development of production programmes for economic utilization of pond embankments for growing vegetables and crops for human and/or livestock consumption.

OBJECTIVES:

1. determination of optimum density of chicken for maximizing fish production in an integrated system under prevailing local conditions;

1. provision of fish farmers with spawn of cultivated carps over a longer period of the year than it is at present, by inducing early maturation in carps through manipulation of the (micro-)environment of the broodstock;
2. optimize the utilization of hatchery and nursing space.

1. determination of the optimum stocking density in brood fish ponds for obtaining maximum spawning success with different species combinations;
2. determination of the quality and quantity of feed needed for optimum maturation of carps.

1. development of rearing methodologies for second spawning (in the same year) of carps through manipulation of stocking densities, feeding rates and fertilization schedules.

1. development of criteria for identification of ready-to-spawn female brood carps;

1. evaluation of the efficacy of (easily available) marine pituitary for breeding Indian and Chinese carps;
2. determination of the dose of marine fish pituitary neded for breeding Indian and Chinese carps.

1. development of methods/techniques for breeding of Clarias sp. in ponds and rice fields, in order to achieve large scale production of fingerlings;
2. development of techniques for nursing of fry/fingerlings in ponds and rice fields;
3. training of farmers in the techniques developed in this project.

1. assay of available genetic variations in cultured carps and catfish by enzyme electrophoresis;
2. production of gynogenetics (for fast inbreeding) by heat/cold shock treatment of eggs fertilized with UV-irradiated sperms;
3. production of hybrid vigor between gynogenetically produced intergeneric and interspecific hybrids;
4. production of triploids and tetraploids;
5. karyologicical and biochemical genetic cntrol of manipulated individuals;
6. comparison of growth performance between normal, diploid, triploid and tetraploid individuals produced;
7. development of special techniques (sex-reversal, cryopreservation of sperm).

1. development of methodologies for single and two stage nursing of fry/fingerlings;
2. determination of optimum stocking densities of fry/fingerlings;
3. determination of quality and quantity of fertilizers/manures required for optimum growth and survival of fry/fingerlings;
4. determination of quality and quantity of feed needed at different stocking densities;
5. improvement of survival of fry/fingerlings during transportation;
6. determination of the economics of different operations;
7. demonstration of practices developed and preparation of extension pamphlets.

1. determination of optimum stocking densities and species ratios of different cultivated species for maximizing growth and yield;
2. determination of optimum fertilization and feeding rates for different stocking densities and species compositions;
3. determination of methodologies for control of predators and competitors;
4. demonstration of the results to the farmers and preparation of extension pamphlets.

1. determination of optimum stocking densities in mono- and poly-culture (with carps) based on Clarias sp.;
2. determination of optimum fertilization and feeding rates;
3. determination of the economics of different operations;
4. demonstration of results to small-scale farmers.

1. survey of Clarias populations in the country to identify morphological, meristic, and genetic differences, if any, between these populations;
2. selection of suitable stocks for pond production.

OBJECTIVES:

1. introduction and popularizatrion of tilapia and small fish farming as homestead enterprise of rural people;
2. development and adaptation of viable small-scale aquaculture technologies of these fishes;
3. investigations into the profitability and economic viability of tilapia and small fish farming operations;
4. feed back of results obtained in the experimental field to the marginal farmers through extension and demonstration services.

OBJECTIVES:

1. development of culture systems to increase the sustainable yield of exportable froglegs, especially of the bull frog Rana tigrina;
2. determination of the economics of frog culture in Bangladesh.

OBJECTIVES:

1. identification of where, when, in what form potential feed ingredients, that are economically, technically and nutritionally feasible to include in fish feeds, are available in the country;
2. determination of the biochemical composition of each of the enlisted ingredients/raw materials.

OBJECTIVES:

1. determination of the digestibility of protein sources of different origin by various cultivated fish species;
2. determination of the optimimum and most economic plant/animal protein ratio for different cultivated fish species.

OBJECTIVES:

1. formulation and preparation of feeds for larvae, fry, fingerlings, and foodfish of different species, using indigenous raw materials, based on their biochemical composition and availability;
2. recommendation of guidelines for the storage of manufactured fish feeds on the basis of their shelf life;
3. extension of feed technology.

OBJECTIVES:

1. identification of the diseases of commercially important species of fish in the country;
2. identification of the parasites occurring in the commercially important species of fish, their intensity of infection, and their economic damage;
3. identification of environmental factors that lead to infection of fishes;
4. provision of diagnostic services to fish farmers.

OBJECTIVES:

1. identification of locally available drugs/chemicals that could cure/control diseases and parasites of fishes;
2. determination of dosages of drugs/chemicals needed for treating individual fish, and for treatment in ponds;
3. preparation of extension pamphlets for dissemination of first-line health care information.

OBJECTIVES:

1. study of the present status of fish culture in closed waters and of capture fisheries in open inland waters;
2. identification of the constraints for increasing production facing the industry;
3. estimate of the future potential of these water bodies when the constraints are taken care of;
4. preparation of recommendations to the Government to overcome the constraints facing the industry.

OBJECTIVES:

1. study of the existing marketing practices for shellfish and finfish from culture and capture fisheries;
2. identification of the problems faced by persons involved at different levels in the marketing chain;
3. recommendation of appropriate marketing procedures to the Government for getting maximum benefit to the producers.

OBJECTIVES:

1. analysis of the cost-benefit ratio of different aquaculture practices - extensive, semi-intensive and intensive - both for fish and shrimp;
2. study of the social aspects involved in the introduction of modern aquaculture practices;
3. recommendation, based on the results of above studies, to the Government of those aquaculture practices, that could give optimum financial and social benefits to the people.

OBJECTIVES:

1. determination of the effects of enforcement of the Tank Enforcement Act on the ue of derelict/non-used ponds;
2. preparation of recommendations to the Government for improvement of the situation, if needed.
