- Water bodies like river, canal, reservoirs, are the natural spawning ground for major carps. They do not breed in ponds.

Following factors do influence major carp breeding:
Temperature
Light
Dissolved Oxygen
Availability of Food, Etc.
- It is now possible to induce major carps to spawn in confined water like pond, tanks, hatchery etc.

- Following spawning, the eggs are fertilized outside the body by the sperm released by males. Young fishes are hatched out of those fertilized eggs.

- There is virtually no difference between the fry produced through induced breeding and natural breeding.

- However, it is advisable to procure hatchlings of the desired fish species from hatchery rather than from wild collection for culture.
