CURRENT SITUATION

The 1997 main season cereal crops in the important growing southern highland areas benefited from abundant rains in May. Rains in June were also satisfactory. Early crop prospects are generally favourable. Food prices remain stable despite a reduced cereal harvest in 1996. An FAO/WFP Mission which visited the country last December estimated food aid requirements at 289 000 tons of cereals. However, pledges by the end of June amounted to 29 000 tons.
