INTERGOVERNMENTAL GROUP ON TEA

Thirteenth Session

Ottawa, Canada, 27-29 September 1999

PROJECT PROFILES FOR CONSIDERATION BY
THE GROUP FOR SUBMISSION TO THE
COMMON FUND FOR COMMODITIES

Table of Contents

I. INTRODUCTION

1. This document provides a compilation of project profiles submitted by various countries, for consideration by the Group for submission to the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) for funding. As the current tea project sponsored by the Group, A Programme to Create an Increased Demand for Tea and Generic Promotion, is ending this year, it is prudent that the Group consider other proposals for submission to the Fund.

2. The objectives of the proposals satisfy the statement of priorities submitted by the Group to the CFC as containing the major areas of activities considered important to the Group.

3. The Group is invited to review these profiles and any others that may be submitted between now and the Thirteenth Session in Ottawa from 27-29 September 1999, and make recommendations as to which projects should be developed further for submission to the CFC for funding consideration.

II. PROFILES

Project Profile 1

Name of Project: In Search of Reliable Reliable Parameters and Their Use as Objective Quality Indicators in Black Tea

Proposing Country: Kenya

Purpose and Objectives:

  1. This study hopes to help create more objective black tea quality assessment methods covering black tea of diverse background.
  2. It is hoped that the results will help producers modify processing technologies and/or agronomic practices to produce black teas of improved quality. Ultimately, it is hoped with reliable quality quantifying method(s) developed, black teas of higher quality can be produced resulting in improved earnings by the farmers and more consumer satisfaction.

Project Profile 2

Name of Project: Development, Production and Promotion of Organic Tea in the World

Proposing Countries: China and India

Purpose and Objectives:

The purpose of the project is:

  1. To produce organic teas with. better quality and more benefits to human health, to prevent soil erosion and. reduce environmental pollution, as well as to increase tea farmers' income.
  2. To establish a fundamental organic and sustainable farming procedure and to develop a systematic technology of organic tea processing and storing for tea farmers through selected TRIs' research and development.
  3. To set up model organic tea farms, 500 ha in each selected tea-producing countries for extension of organic tea technologies.
  4. To increase world consumption on organic tea by promotion of the new products.
  5. To minimize environmental pollution through applying of ecologically and environmentally balanced organic farming practice.

With proper organic and sustainable farming practices the following should be accomplished:

Beneficiaries:

  1. World tea farmers will be benefited from the project as organic teas can be sold at higher price as compared to common teas.
  2. World tea consumers will be benefited from the project as organic tea with better quality and more benefits to human health.
  3. Tea producing countries will be benefited from the project, as environmental pollution will be decreased by use of organic farming practices.
