Available data on annual nominal effort (number of fishing trips) have been compiled for each of the four countries and for each fishing gear whenever feasible (Table 7).
The pelagic fishery potential, expressed in number of canoes or boats, was also compiled (Table 8).
Effort analysis proper could not be made insofar as it concerned nominal efforts whose translation into actual effort remains difficult. This analysis is possible for Côte d'Ivoire industrial sardinella fishing boats whose fleet is homogeneous and on which detailed information is available, although it represents but a segment of the fisheries and is limited to the Côte d'Ivoire EEZ. These data are used for surveys by the Fishery-Climate programme.
