ABSTRACT

With recent substantial increases in harvests from the Ugandan sector of Lake Victoria, related mostly to the Nile perch succession, several industrial ventures have been established and others are planned. Operations are geared to serve both domestic and export markets. Although primarily concerned with the exploitation of Nile perch, there is interest in the processing and marketing of tilapia and the small pelagic Rastrineobola spp. as well. This paper reviews the context and development of industrialisation and considers its implications for future directions of the Lake fisheries.
