These notes have been prepared with the assistance of Mr. F.M. Walyamboga, Regional Fisheries Officer, Kabale/Rukungiri Districts, and Dr. E.R. van der Meeren, Social Anthropologist and Senior Associate, Makerere Institute of Social Research (c/o Makerere University, P.O. Box 16022, Kampala). Dr. van den Meeren is currently engaged in field research in Kabale/Rukungiri. Her research is sponsored by OXFAM, with logistical support from UNICEF. The background material provided by Mr. Walyamboga and Dr. van den Meeren on the history of fish farming within the districts and the demographic, socio-cultural, and economic factors that have had such a fundamental effect on modern Kiga life are gratefully acknowledged.
