The Ad Hoc group was composed of the following experts:
- Mr. chouba, Tunisia
- Mr. Guelorget, France
- Mr. katavic, Croatia
- Mr. Orbi, Morocco
and,
- Mr. Barg, FAO
- Mr. Belkhir, MEDRAP II
- Mr. Ledoux, consultant
The objective of the meeting was to elaborate proposals of activities for implementation in 1994–95. It was agreed that the activities he characterised by their topics and type of actions. The detailed description including objectives, outputs, workplans and budgets will be prepared and presented during a working group session to be help in Biarritz on September 1993. The final proposal for activities will be forwarded to MEDRAP II and MAP-PAP/RAC for presentation to their respective decisional bodies.
The main topics have been selected as follows:
Lagoon Management
Interaction between Aquaculture and Environment
Site evaluation and protection
Ecologically sound integrated management of mollusc culture.
3.1 LAGOON MANAGEMENT :
The organisation of this typic activities will be under the responsability of Institut Scientifique des Pêches Maritimes (ISPM, Mr. Orbi), Morocco. Three workshops are foreseen during 1994–95 and over on :
- hydrodynamic (Nador in Morocco)
- Ecology (Bemeylech in turkey)
- Socio-Economic and Legal Aspects (Bizerte in Tunisia)
The workshop on Socio-Economic and Legal Aspects could be held in collaboration with SELAM Network.
A general synthesis of these three workshop will be discussed in a Symposium to be held in Montpellier.
Institutions from the following countries will be invited to participate in these workshops: Albania, Algeria, Bulgaria, Egypt, Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia and Turkey.
Before the September meeting, Institutions and Experts will be identified by Mr. Orbi and will be requested to fill in a questionnaire on protocol, experiences, past and current activities on Lagoon the agenda of the above mentioned workshops.
It is agreed that the participants to these activities will be selected according to their potential contributions.
3.2 INTERACTION BETWEEN AQUACULTURE AND ENVIRONMENT :
The organisation of this Topic activities will be under the responsability of Institut National Scientifique et Technique d'Océanographie et des Pêches (INSTOP, Mr. Chouba), Tunisia.
Going through the four culture systems quoted in the Draft Network Documnet: Lagoonar production, land-base aquaculture, mollusc culture and cage culture, the following comments were made :
- The lagoonar production is covered by topic 1.
- land-base aquaculture is considered of limited interest, due to its low production level, as far as marine aquaculture is concerned.
- Mollusc culture is recognised as important because of the already existing production in several countries. However, it will rather be the subject of topic 4.
- Cage culture is selected as the most appropriate system to be studied particularly the fish cage culture and other similar offshore systems.
Eutrophication resulting from intensification of aquaculture and the relations between pathology and environment will be part of the subjects to be reviewed.
The activities will include a seminar or a workshop to be held in 1994 and a pilot field study over the years 1994–95.
The output will be the elaboration of guidelines for the environmental management of a farm.
3.3 SITE EVALUATION AND PROTECTION :
The organisation of this Topic activities will be under the responsability of Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (IOF, Mr. Katavic), Croatia.
Considering the following sequences:
selection of descriptors - monitoring - site selection
selection of descriptors - monitoring - site protection
Selection of descriptors - modeling - site selection
selection of descriptors - modeling - site protection
it has been decided to focus on monitoring for site protection and to extend the subject to site evaluation and protection.
The type of activities will be :
A workshop on selection of descriptors and methodology (1994)
A field case study ( 1994–95 and over ).
3.4 ECOLOGICCALLY SOUND INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT OF MOLLUSC CULTURE :
The organisation of this Topic activities will be under the responsability of Institut Français de la Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer (IFREMER, expert to be designated by IFREMER), France.
Due to multiple interactions with the environment, already identified in the Mediterranean, it has been agreed that mollusc culture is most adequate for a case study in the field of integrated management.
A workshop is planned for 1994, based on a case study of a local coastal zone. The location could be in the Sète area, France, which offers lagoonar mollusc production as well as offshore production.
The Institutions responsible of the four topic activities will invite, before end of July, all countries to provide information on current and future activities relevant to concerned topics. This information should be forwarded to them prior to the September meeting.
It was suggested that MEDRAP invite experts from the following countries and institutions to participate in the September meeting in Biarritz: Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey and FAO and MAP-PAP/RAC.
