General FAO estimates and forecasts are based on official and unofficial sources. Unless otherwise stated, all charts and tables refer to FAO data as source. Estimates of world imports and exports may not always match, mainly because shipments and deliveries do not necessarily occur in the same marketing year. Tonnes refer to tonnes. All totals are computed from unrounded data. Regional totals may include estimates for countries not listed. The countries shown in the tables were chosen based on their importance of either production or trade in each region. The totals shown for Central America include countries in the Caribbean. Estimates for China also include those for the Taiwan Province, Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR, unless otherwise stated. Up to 2006 or 2006/07, the European Union includes 25 Member States. From 2007 or 2007/08 onwards, the European Union includes 27 Member States. '-' means nil or negligible. Production Cereals: Data refer to the calendar year in which the whole harvest or bulk of harvest takes place. Sugar: Figures refer to centrifugal sugar derived from sugar cane or beet, expressed in raw equivalents. Data relate to the October/September season. Utilization Cereals: Data are on individual country's marketing year basis. Sugar: Figures refer to centrifugal sugar derived from sugar cane or beet, expressed in raw equivalents. Data relate to the October/September season . Trade Trade between European Union Member States is excluded, unless otherwise stated. Wheat: Trade data include wheat flour in wheat grain equivalent. The time reference period is July/June, unless otherwise stated. Coarse grains: The time reference period is July/June, unless otherwise stated. Rice, dairy and meat products: The time reference period is January/December. Oilseeds, oils and fats and meals and sugar: The time reference period is October/September, unless otherwise stated. Stocks Cereals: Data refer to carryovers at the close of national crop seasons ending in the year shown. COUNTRY CLASSIFICATION In the presentation of statistical material, countries are subdivided according to geographical location as well as into the following two main economic groupings: " developed countries" (including the developed market economies and the transition markets) and " developing countries" (including the developing market economies and the Asia centrally planned countries). The designation "Developed" and "Developing" economies is intended for statistical convenience and does not necessarily express a judgement about the stage reached by a particular country or area in the development process. References are also made to special country groupings: Low-Income Food-Deficit Countries (LIFDCs), Least Developed Countries (LDCs). The LIFDCs include 77 countries that are net importers of basic foodstuffs with per caput income below the level used by the World Bank to determine eligibility for International Development Aid (IDA) assistance (i.e. USD 1 735 in 2006). The LDCs group currently includes 50 countries with low income as well as weak human resources and low level of economic diversification. The list is reviewed every three years by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Established in the wake of the world food crisis of the early 1970s, GIEWS maintains a unique database on all aspects of food supply and demand for every country of the world. The system regularly provides policy-makers and the international community with up-to-date and accurate information so that timely interventions can be planned and suffering avoided.
