1. INTRODUCTION

Following a request by the Government of Zambia for assistance in assessing the potential for the establishment of large-scale commercial aquaculture production units in the country, the mission, composed of M.M.J. Vincke, Senior Fisheries Officer; J. Kövári, Aquaculture Engineer; and U.W. Schmidt, Fisheries Officer, of the Aquaculture Development and Coordination Programme (ADCP, INT/79/027), Fisheries Department, FAO, Rome, arrived in Lusaka on 24 June 1978.

The mission visited Kaoma, Mwekera, Masaiti, Solwezi, Chipata, Lundazi, Isoka, and Masama to assess the fish-farming potential of these areas, to design and plan commercial fish farms, and to plan the upgrading and expansion of the existing fish ponds. During visits to the sites, the mission was accompanied by Mr. E. Boma, Senior Fish Culturist, Department of Fisheries, Chilanga, for whose assistance and helpful advice the mission is very grateful.

Due to the limited amount of time, the mission was not able to visit Isoka and Kasama.
