The country ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), with reservations, in 1981.
The Legal Office for the Defense of Human Rights has a women's unit. Agrarian Reform programme which began in 1980, as well as the Agrarian Code, consider women as collaborating with or supporting male producers, rather than as producers in their own right.
