CURRENT SITUATION

Heavy rains in mid-September caused floods in the centre of the country. About 25 000 hectares were inundated, resulting in losses to crops and livestock, and numerous people homeless. According to the government, about 105 000 people need food and medical assistance. Precipitation decreased in general in the north and the centre in late September, October and November but remained widespread, except in the Kandi region where rains stopped in early October. In the south, the second season maize crop is heading. In the north, millet and sorghum have been harvested.

The national food supply situation is satisfactory. Markets are well supplied, notably in the south, following the harvest of the first maize crop. Approximately 45 000 Togolese refugees are still in Benin according to a recent survey; their nutritional situation is not critical. For 1995, cereal imports are estimated at 250 000 tons, mainly rice, of which about three quarters are re-exported to neighbouring countries, notably Nigeria. The food aid requirements of 9 000 tons includes exceptional food aid for the Togolese refugees.
