CURRENT SITUATION

Seasonably dry condition prevail. Seasonal rainfall in 1996 has been sufficient, despite some dry spells in mid-May, early July and mid/ late September. Following favourable conditions, foodcrop production is expected to be good notably in Borgou and Atacora. FAO estimates of the aggregate 1996 cereal output indicate about 680 000 tons, which is higher than average.

The food supply situation is satisfactory following the harvesting and marketing of main foodcrops in late 1996 and maize imports from Nigeria. Gari is exported to Niger and yam to Burkina Faso. Niebe, groundnuts and maize are exported to Togo. There are about 11 000 Togolese refugees in Benin.
