Conclusions and conference recommendations

23. FAO continues to make remarkable progress in the implementation of the Plan of Action for Women in Development both in its institutional arrangements and in its assistance to Member Nations, especially in regard to the overarching goal of mainstreaming the integration of WID/gender issues into the larger programme of work of the Organization. The very special effort to revise the Plan of Action in a highly participatory manner has led to more clearly defined medium-term objectives and activities regarding WID/gender concerns by the Technical Divisions. Moreover, with quite specified indicators to measure the progress in achieving these objectives over the next several biennia, these Divisional Programmes should enhance the ability of the Organization to achieve the goals set out in the Plan of Action through 2001.

24. With increased support from the donor countries, the implementation of the Plan could be expanded in such critical areas as: strengthening the WID/gender analysis capabilities of staff of Government Ministries and NGOs; enhancing the capacity of Governments to collect and use improved, gender-disaggregated statistical data for planning purposes; developing national level Plans of Action as follow-up to the Fourth World Conference; and, increasing the sharing of information and experiences through South-South Cooperation and Partnership Programmes.
