The problem
800 million people in developing countries face chronic undernutrition
199 million children under the age of five suffer from acute or chronic protein and energy deficiences
Although progress has been made in producing more food for the world's people
the benefits have not been equally distributed.
And if current trends continue, by 2010 there could still be as many as
730 million chronically undernourished people in the world...
While agriculture struggles to keep pace with population,
The vital resources on which agriculture depends are being overexploited and misused
Arable land and clean water are becoming scarce
And agriculture is losing ground as a priority for research, investment and external assistance.
