Research objectives

Research objectives

The main objects of analysis of the SEU have been the social structures, socio-territorial units and socio-economic entities of groups within the project areas. Research has also assessed the primary mechanisms of the production systems of local populations as well as their differential use of natural resources.

More particularly, the research has attempted to answer the following questions:

?

    * how are local populations socially organized ?

    * how do their production systems function ?

    * what are their objectives ?

    * what are the main strategies to achieve these objectives?

    * what are the main constraints they face?

    * what are the main consequences of these for development policies and programmes ?

Data collected has also identified settlement patterns, illuminated basic socio-demographic characteristics, and uncovered the nature of power relations within and between groups through the identification of local decision-making entities, and various forms of leadership.
