Equipment news

The continual development of forestry utilization and woodworking industries is reflected in the increasing demand for information on new equipment. FAO's Forestry Division, on the recommendation of the FAO Conference, collects such information and sends it on request to member nations. There is also a regular feature in UNASYLVA dealing with new equipment, and the Forestry Division appreciates receiving data from manufacturers all over the world. Specifications should be accompanied by clear, sharp photographs (glossy prints) of the equipment. FAO, however, can accept no obligation to publish all such information received.

MOTOROLA HANDIE TALKIE.

MOTOROLA HANDIE TALKIE. - FM 2-way radio - 25-50 MC ½ watt. Dimensions: 10 in. high (25.4 cm.) by 12 5/8 in. long (32 cm.) by 3 1/8 in. wide (8 cm.). Total weight including batteries, Handset antenna and carrying strap: single transmitter unit, 9.8 lb. (4.445 kg.), dual transmitter unit, 11.5 lb. (5.217 kg.).

This handle talkie is particularly suited for use in lumber camps and for forest fire fighting because of its light weight and compactness.

CATCHMENT BASIN FOR RAIN WATER WHICH CAN BE USED FOR HELICOPTER LANDINGS.

CATCHMENT BASIN FOR RAIN WATER WHICH CAN BE USED FOR HELICOPTER LANDINGS. - This reservoir was designed in California by the U. S. Forest Service. It is intended for collecting rain water to be used later for fire fighting. The area of the platform has been calculated to allow for the collection of 5,000 gallons (22,500 litres); account has therefore been taken of the average rainfall of the region which amounts to 17 inches (43.2 cm.). If the platform is to be used as a landing ground for helicopters it is necessary to reinforce it to the required strength. The example shown in the photograph does not have the usual ridge around the platform which prevents the water from overflowing in the event of a high wind.

CONCRETE POTS USED IN NURSERIES.

CONCRETE POTS USED IN NURSERIES. - Since all evergreens and most coniferous plants in Israel are raised in nurseries in receptacles such as earthenware pots and petrol tins, which are scarce, the problem has been solved by producing concrete tubs. Two types are in use: the usual conical form and a square one, each type being made in four different sizes. The square type is easier to handle and therefore more economical in the nursery.

After a comparatively short time in use, the following conclusions were reached:

(1) Concrete pots are much stronger than earthenware pots and last longer.

(2) The pots can be manufactured quickly in large quantities as they are produced in molds.

(3) Initial cost of production is lower than that of earthenware pots, which require baking, and in the long run even cheaper than tin.

(4) The cost of the equipment used for mass production is very small and materials required are available in the country.

(5) When placed tightly side by side weeds cannot grow between the pots, and also no water is wasted.

LES GRIMPETTES

"LES GRIMPETTES" - This apparatus is used for climbing trees principally for collecting seeds and for pruning. It is composed of two similar parts, one for each leg. Each has a vertical carrying arm to which is attached, on the lower part, a pedal with two straps, one in the front and one at the back of the leg, and on the upper part, a clamping device revolving on a horizontal axle into which is fixed one of the ends of the steel band; the other end is inserted back in the jaws and can be adjusted to fit the diameter of the tree by means of a lever, a supporting brook with a bumper is fixed at the upper part of the carrying arm. A coil-spring is placed between the clamping device and the supporting brook and is intended to keep the band free of weight in an appropriate position. In order that both feet may rest at the same level the two carrying arms are not of equal length.

PORTABLE WOOD CHIPPER

PORTABLE WOOD CHIPPER. - Several American Canadian firms are now turning out portable wood chippers. Mounted directly on a tractor, truck or trailer, they are used mostly by farmers and private forest owners to break up discarded timber for sale to paper and fiberboard factories.

Tests of these machines in North America have proved them satisfactory for gleaning up cutover areas. They generally consist of a drum in which blades turn at from 1,000 to 3,000 r.p.m., depending on the model. Chunks of wood up to 6 ½ in. (15 cm.) diameter can be out up. The chippers are powered either by a separate motor of from 20 to 30 h. p. or by the vehicle motor if mounted directly on the chassis.

FLECO DETACHABLE STUMPER

FLECO DETACHABLE STUMPER. - The Fleco Detachable Stumper for use with a Caterpillar tractor bulldozer arrangement. The illustration shows the same detachable stumper from a side view. The face is curved so that the stumper can get under the stump and pick it up; at the same time the sharp teeth, with the power of the tractor, out or break the lateral roots. The detachable stumper will penetrate the ground up to approximately 24 in. and will out a path between 30 in. to 36 in. The full power of the tractor is concentrated in the area of the stumper.

THE AUTOMULE

THE AUTOMULE. - The Automule is a load-carrying track-laying tractor designed especially for logging under difficult conditions such as may be encountered in mountains. In the case of highway hauls, the Automule can be put on four pneumatic-tired wheels.

Specifications: Model M 25: Engine, 2 cyl. Steyr WD 213; power; 26 h.p. at 1,500 r.p.m.; Model M 60: Engine 4 cyl. Steyr WD 413; power, 60 h.p. at 1,500 r.p.m.; fuel consumption, 180 to 200 grams/hp/hr.

Three forward and three reverse speeds; speed range on crawler tracks is 1.61 to 4.47 m. p. h., and 4.25 to 11.93 m. p. h. on wheels, for both machines; with over-drives maximum speeds can be increased to 5.59 and 9.07 m. p. h. on crawler tracks and to 14.5 and 24.09 m. p. h. for wheel tractors. Maximum drawbar pull is 4,474 lb. for the small model and 10,403 lb. for the larger model. Logs can be loaded either on to a semi-trailer or directly on to the back of the tractor. An arch or skidding pan can be attached to the tractor. A winch can be fixed to the front in addition to one or two auxiliary winches at the back; every known method of rigging can therefore be employed. Each track has an independent brake which facilitates maneuvrability on winding roads.

Drott Manufacturing Corporation Milwaukee 8 Wisconsin, U.S.A.

HAULING WINCH

HAULING WINCH. - The windint drum of the winch is vertical. It is composed of a bridge turning round its axle, bearing on the spray anchor. This bridge is looked after each operation so that the load is transferred to the tangential point of contact on the drum; thus the tractor does not take the load regardless of the direction of the haul. For this reason it is possible to perform all kinds of discharging work without being obliged to alter the position of the tractor after each operation. These winches are readily adaptable to all types of tractors built for the hauling of three and five tons and will take about 100 meters of cable.
