Foreword

Parasitic diseases cause serious illness and often death in human populations and domestic livestock, particularly in the tropics. These include malaria, trypanosomiasis and tick-borne diseases. Important recent developments in the fields of immunology, biochemistry and molecular biology might make it possible to control some of these diseases. An international workshop on parasite antigens was held at the International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases (ILRAD) in May 1985. The objectives of the workshop were (1) to review the current status of research aimed at characterizing, producing and utilizing parasite antigens which could lead to the improved control of parasitic diseases, (2) to identify constraints which impede the progress of this research, and (3) to explore new approaches towards the solution of these major disease problems.

This report of the workshop consists of summaries of the presentations and discussions prepared by ILRAD staff members who served as rapporteurs. These were S. Black, P. Conrad, J.A. Ellis, W.R. Fish, P. Gardiner, D.J. Grab, R. Hall, K. Iams, J. Lonsdale-Eccles, P.A.O. Majiwa, O. ole MoiYoi, W.I. Morrison, V.M. Nantulya, S.J. Shapiro and J. Young. The report was edited by S.B. Westley and V. Howe. We are grateful to the distinguished scientists who participated in the workshop and gave us the benefit of their experience and expertise.
