This research report presents the findings of the study of the dairy marketing systems that cater primarily for the consuming households in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. The study is part of a series of studies of dairy marketing systems in sub-Saharan Africa which are being undertaken by the Socio-economic Sciences Division (SESD) of the International Livestock Centre for Africa (ILCA), and by collaborating institutions. Ethiopia was selected as the country in which to undertake the first case study.
The authors acknowledge the support, encouragement and professional contributions of Stephen Sandford, former head of the SESD (earlier called Livestock Economics Division), during the design and execution of the study. His constructive criticisms on earlier drafts of this research report were highly appreciated. Useful comments were also received from other staff members in the SESD. We also acknowledge the very great assistance given to us by staff of ILCA's computer unit, and in particular by Eta Kontrohr. After the authors left Ethiopia, having completed the first draft, Berhanu Anteneh made a substantial input to the work in validating and reanalysing the data. He also helped us in the supervision of the enumerators and data coders, thus contributing to the data consistency. We are extremely grateful to him. This final version of the report was prepared by the main author (Stephen G. Mbogoh) while serving as a faculty member in the University of Nairobi, Kenya. He is extremely grateful to Mrs. Margaret Oriaro, formerly Finance and Administrative Officer of ILCA/Kenya and Miss Josephine Njuki of ILCA/Kenya for their support and assistance in the typing of this final version of the report. The authors, however, remain solely responsible for any shortcoming that may still remain in the report.
