31. The Committee reviewed its role within FAO's recently adopted Strategic Framework and the Fisheries Department's Medium-Term Perspectives and noted the need to extract and consider the research priorities that stem from these.
32. The Committee considered the Medium-Term Perspectives to be satisfactory. It also pointed out that the document did not clearly identify research issues needed to fulfil the perspectives.
33. The Committee noted the mandate and research focus toward development themes, management issues and concepts that led to the elaboration of policy advice. It recognized the balance that the Fisheries Department needed to maintain between core programme activities and priorities that might be articulated from various sources, including COFI, the Ministerial Meeting and supporting donors.
