Programme prospectus
Many institutions realize that capacity building programmes are more effective if they are held locally. With inputs from an organization such as WEDC, this is a cost-effective way of developing human resources in the water, sanitation and waste management sectors and bringing international best practice to national organizations and training institutions.
WEDC has substantial experience in the design and delivery of in-country training programmes in Africa and South Asia, including capacity-building of local training institutions through partnership development. WEDC prefers to design and facilitate programmes together with local partners and clients. This is an important part of the capacity building process, ensuring the understanding of client's perspective and that the local organization is not just a recipient of a standard training package. This partnership ensures that the programme design best meets identified capacity-building needs.

If necessary, WEDC can be directly involved in capacity building needs assessment exercises, prior to course or programme design. Programme duration is flexible, to meet local requirements. Where appropriate programmes are jointly facilitated with local training institutions. This develops their capacities and balances WEDC's international expertise with local insight and knowledge. Working with local providers is one method of delivering programmes in the most suitable format.

Brief description of institution/organization
The Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) is one of the world's leading institutions concerned with education, training, research and consultancy relating to the planning, provision and management of infrastructure for development in low- and middle-income countries.

WEDC is devoted to activities that improve the health and well-being of people living in both rural areas and urban communities. We encourage the integration of technological, environmental, social, economic and management inputs for effective and sustainable development.

WEDC has steadily increased its range of activities, level of expertise and number of staff since it was founded in 1971. It now forms the core of the Institute of Development Engineering, established in 1995 to reflect the growth of new areas of professional interest that have broadened well beyond the boundaries of water and sanitation engineering.
