Programme prospectus
Upon completion of training,
participants will be able to understand the need and advantage of Participatory
Irrigation Management, participate with farmers in the process of forming Water
Users Associations, mobilize farmers to select the right leadership and form the
Water Users Associations and to enable the water user association office bearers
run the water user association effectively.
The training course includes: PIM concepts, purpose and
advantage; relevance of process documentation in irrigation management; PIM case
studies; group dynamics for improved interaction; SWOT (Strength, Weakness,
Opportunity and Threat) analysis of institutions for water management;
irrigation and rural society interface; group organizers and training needs;
maintenance of the system as a function of farmer organizations; PIM under Water
Resources Consolidation Project (WRCP); search of local leadership; economic
viability of farmer organizations; national and State water policies; gender
issues in PIM; principle of organization for water management; PIM operational
part; types and structures of farmer organizations; and measurement of water and
collection of fees as a function of farmer organizations.

Brief description of institution/organization
The
Tamilnadu Irrigation Management Training Institute (IMTI) is one of 11
institutions set up in the country with financial assistance from the United
States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the Water Resources
Management and Training Project, which was established in April 1984.
The objectives of the Institute are to:
- Impart training to the in service personnel
serving in the Department of Public Works, Agricultural Engineering and
Agriculture.
- Increase agricultural productivity, rural income, development
of the human resources and their efficiency in managing system with farmers
participation.
- Conduct Action Research in a live irrigation system with
farmers participation.
- Motivate the farmers to form water users
associations (WUA).
IMTI is a society governed by a Governing Council comprising a
chairperson, vice chairperson, member secretary and other members. |
