Programme prospectus
Over the years, Israel has invested great effort in countering the arid and semi-arid conditions prevailing throughout most of the country, by increasing the efficiency of irrigation. Water scarcity and the constraints imposed by the high cost of water urged scientists, extension workers, farmers and manufacturers to develop pressurized irrigation technologies that improved water use efficiency in irrigation.

Adoption of pressurized irrigation technologies has reduced the consumption of irrigation water per unit of land by 50-70 percent, at the same time the yields of some crops have doubled. In addition to the advanced irrigation methods, fertigation technologies were introduced, which has achieved tremendous results in the efficient use of fertilizers, higher yields and improved produce quality.

The course's main subjects are: Hydraulics of pressurized irrigation systems, design of an irrigation system on the farm, pressurized irrigation technologies (sprinkler, drip and micro jet irrigation), soil-water-plant relationships, crop water requirement, drainage requirement, pumps, fertigation, scheduling of irrigation, monitoring soil moisture, soil fertility and salinity, irrigation with saline and recycled water, automation, computer programming and economical aspects of irrigation.

Upon return to their home countries, the participants are expected to be able to evaluate the plant, water and fertilizer requirements, design and evaluate irrigation systems and provide irrigation services to farmers.

Target group
Professionals involved in pressurized irrigation from public institutions, private companies and NGOs.

Brief description of institution/organization
The Center for International Agricultural Development Cooperation (CINADCO) of Israel's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, operates as the main professional and operational agricultural arm for Israel's development assistance agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Center for International Cooperation (MASHAV).

CINADCO's headquarters is located at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Complex in Bet Dagan on the outskirts of Tel Aviv, Israel. Agriculture has been the major component of Israel's international cooperation programme since its establishment in the late 1950s. Aiming primarily to share its agricultural development experience with the developing world, CINADCO's programmes focus on combining sound professional experience with practical field level orientation, through improved agro-ecological methods and technological agricultural development practices, with a strong and continuous link to the country's own professional and practical agricultural development experience.

In this context, CINADCO offers professional services in those subjects where Israel's own experience reflects sound professional know-how and technological strengths related to agriculture and the environment.

These services range from crop and livestock-production practices, technologies, water management saving irrigation methods and systems, farm management, forestry and agro-ecology to research and development (R&D), agricultural extension, supporting systems, agribusiness consulting services, development related to arid and semi-arid regions and additional topics for sustainable
agricultural development.
