Programme prospectus
The course addresses the currently available techniques in irrigation systems and canal operation. Specifically, manually-operated upstream controlled irrigation systems, where water is delivered on supply oriented criteria for a prescribed cropping pattern.

Water Users Associations have flexibility in selecting cropping patterns and water is requested on an on-demand basis. The course discusses and analyses the constraints to implementation of such decisions with presently available techniques and irrigation infrastructure. Also covered are the possibilities of modernizing some key irrigation networks using structural arrangements such as hydraulically automated, or remotely or in situ controlled, structures to improve the flexibility of operation and intermediate storage for flexibility in delivery.

In addition, techniques for improved communication and data accessing for real time decision-making in irrigation system and canal operation are discussed. The possibilities of using hydraulic simulation models to understand the behaviour of irrigation canals under different operating conditions are discussed to facilitate decision making.

Irrigation Training Institute of the Irrigation Department of Sri Lanka is one of the key institutions in the country that offers various short-term in-service training courses on Irrigation Development and Management for most irrigation practitioners in different agencies in Sri Lanka. The institute also conducts a two-year residential course on Irrigation Engineering for advanced level qualified students to practice as Engineering Assistants in the Irrigation Department.
