Livestock and Human Health

Transmission of diseases between animals and human (zoonoses) occurs daily around the globe, whether through agricultural practices or everyday activities. Zoonoses consist of a wide range of diseases. In many cases, educating communities about zoonoses and ways to prevent them is key for the implementation of strategies that decrease their transmission. Veterinary public health (VPH) initiatives in developing countries need therefore to focus especially on the community level and choose programmes prioritized on the basis of disease burdens, that are risk based. Success of these programmes is more likely if veterinarians join forces in a multidisciplinary team and when VPH programmes are fine-tuned to the prevailing circumstances. Attention should also be paid to ecological, cultural, social and ethical aspects regarding the implementation of control programmes.
