ABSTRACT
The FAO report "State of the World's Forests" is
a biennial publication which provides a statement
on the current status of forests and developments
in the forestry sector. This second edition,
"State
of the World's Forests 1997" (SOFO 97),
presents information on the status of the world's
forests over the period 1995-1997, and provides
details of recent trends and future directions in
the forestry sector. Information, much of it new,
is presented on all important aspects of forestry.
These include forest cover and forest resources;
production, consumption and trade in forest
products; the economic, environmental and social
contributions of forests; and developments in
forestry policy and institutions. In addition to
presenting information it analyses and discusses
the major issues and influences and their possible
consequences, in order to clarify what is known -
and not known - about forests and forestry today
and what emerging issues are likely to be of
importance tomorrow.
